The Nature Restoration Nursery
The Australian Botanic Gardens Mt Annan needs your help!
The Landsberg team joined the Australian Botanic Gardens Mount Annan for a tour of their Nature Restoration Nursery.
It was a pleasure to spend the morning with Richard Unsworth from Garden Life and Horticulturalist John Siemon who are leading and supporting the efforts to raise awareness and funding to support this vital program.
Australia faces increasing environmental pressures from biosecurity risks, global warming and deforestation. Without this backup, and in the face of these threats such as bushfire, disease such as Myrtle rust, and Australia's soaring rate of deforestation - our landscapes need this insurance to make sure our children will see these species for generations to come.
The Nursery is a ‘hospital’ to plants across Australia as John described - servicing as a emergency support system especially in post-bushfire scenarios, nursing threatened species back to stable numbers, and using stored seed banks to repopulate wild ecosystems.
The current propagation and plant storage capabilities are not meeting the needs of our landscapes. Facilities are dated and do not meet the requirements of our ecological conditions.
We learnt about the vision for the Nursery, the intricate science behind the work, and the impact it will have on conservation and restoration across NSW and beyond.
This day left our team feeling inspired and driven. Spreading the word about this initiative to family, friends and clients, as well as designing gardens with these local endemic species that are being cultivated by the nursery. Creating demand for new and essential species is how we feed population numbers, increase nursery competition for cultivars, and encourage biodiversity in the public and residential landscapes.
We need future garden designers and plant lovers to experience the biodiversity we see on our bush walks today.
