This is a magical garden in the Southern Highlands where the living spirit is as tangible as the plants, trees and pathways that create the shapes of the garden. It is a garden of mystery, richness and water. Water in mythology has represented interconnectedness, purification and renewal, intuition, the subconscious mind, destruction and creation; all this is a part of this unusual and intriguing garden.

Our client is a gardener and a handy woman at heart. The existing garden has been created with a passion for pottering and arranging, featuring magical ponds, pots, brickwork, intricate channels, sculptures and knick knacks. Remembering and allowing this to continue to exist was an essential part of the concept design.

Knowing when to retain these elements, and when to say goodbye is part of this process. Nonetheless, we always listen to our clients and understand how sentimental a garden can be.

With the cottage refreshed to have cedar cladding and a Japanese engawa feel and The presence of water is not hidden from the eye - from ornamental water in ponds and twinkling through stepping stones to this gardens vital role in channeling stormwater from the surrounding mountainside. We have integrated these elements to make capturing and processing water a joy.
